Early History
The firm of Hughes Fields and Stoby was founded in September 1972 by Clarence A. F. Hughes, Richard B Fields and Robin M.S. Stoby.
The founders were all Barristers who were called to the Inner temple, Lincoln’s inn and Grey’s Inn respectively. They were called to the Bar in the United Kingdom in 1958, 1968 and 1972 respectively.
The firm’s office known as “Hadfield Chambers”, was established at Lot 62 Hadfield and Cross Streets, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown, Demeara Guyana in a nineteenth century colonial building.
The firm quickly established its pre eminence in the practice of law and provided top flight legal services to the commercial community in Guyana and overseas.
The firm’s clientele included several banks, international clients and leading commercial houses in Guyana.
In 1985 Clarence Hughes was admitted to the Inner Bar and conferred with the status of Senior Counsel
Robin Stoby, Richard Fields and Andrew Pollard were awarded silk in 1993, 1996 and 2017 respectively.
Stephen Fraser, Andrew Pollard and C.A. Nigel Hughes joined the firm in 1985, 1987 and 1988 respectively.
The firm expanded the scope of its legal services to include criminal litigation in 1988.
The firm has consistently been ranked in the highest tier of law firms in Guyana.
The founder of the firm Clarence A. F. Hughes S.C transitioned in 2012 and Richard B Fields S.C transitioned in 2016.
